The Millersville Native Plants in the Landscape Conference is held in early June at the now-university in Pennsylvania. It is an opportunity to mingle with like-minded native plant enthusiasts, listen to lectures, go on field trips, and buy plants. The conference itself is just two days but there's pre- and post-conference events. We stay in dorms, eat college food, and have a wonderful time. I have previously attended but not every year. In fact, not for a while. But when this year's announcement arrived there were several topics of particular interest. I sent in my registration.
Thursday through Saturday, 8 - 10 June 2017
Numerous opportunities to shop for native plants. While it is closed while full audience and concurrent sessions are being held you can eat quickly and visit durring breakfast / lunch / dinner, for 100 minutes at the afternoon poster sessions and demos, and evening hours too. In fact, the public can come and shop Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Fourteen vendors. Makes for a very green scene in the gymnasium.
Perennials, ferns, shrubs, trees. Well grown, well labeled.
Not clear if this man just bought the whole tray or is restocking a tabel.
But there are always people swirling around the tables perusing the plants.
And beaming, happily, at finding some desired plant.
Shade plants, especially, are mostly through blooming by June.
Time now for the grassland - meadow and prairie - plants such as
Helenium 'Mardi Gras'. Yes, native plants are finding their way
into the generalist garden where origin is unimportant, beauty is.
Some people must have very large vehicles.
The conference has a plant sitting area. Your plants are tagged and kept secure with someone watching over them. In fact, you can go shop for more and add them to the earlier acquisitions. The kitty litter buckets? I actually brought those, 16 or 17. As I thought they came in useful. My hidden agenda - when the buckets were out of my car there was more room for plants. You didn't think I'd come home without shopping, now did you. In fact, everyone goes home with at least one plant. Pinelands Nursery of Columbus, New Jersey generously donated enough sweet bay magnolia, Magnolia virginiana, for every conference attendee to go home with one.
